First Alert Weather: High surf and breezy trades expected this week

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The trade winds will be the bulk of this week’s weather story. High pressure to the north of the island chain continues to grow and dominate the wind flow, leading to the breezy trade winds across the state. This high-pressure system will increase in strength and intensity as the week progresses, developing windy conditions out of the east-northeast by Wednesday.
As the winds grow in strength, expect some sustained winds on Wednesday and onward to reach 20 miles per hour and above. Wind gusts could potentially climb higher than 30 miles per hour. Spotty showers are also possible this week, mostly remaining over windward and mauka regions.
Surf is also on the rise this week. Two northwest swells are approaching the island chain. The first of which is arriving today, leading to near-advisory surf on north and west-facing shores. A second, larger, swell will arrive on Wednesday. High surf advisories on north and west-facing shores are possible by midweek.
Due to the high surf and strong trades expected during the back half of this week, east-facing shores will also see elevated and choppy conditions. Some minor coastal flooding is possible on low-lying eastern shores.
